The ingredients needed to make Cottage Pie:
  1. Make ready 6 potatoes
  2. Get 1 tablespoon margarine or butter
  3. Take 450 g beef mince
  4. Get 1 large onion
  5. Get 2 small carrots
  6. Make ready 2 sticks celery
  7. Make ready 1 teaspoon vegetable bullion powder (marigold)
  8. Get 1 beef stock cube (oxo)
  9. Get 2 tablespoons beef instant gravy granules (bistro)
  10. Get 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  11. Get Pinch salt
  12. Make ready Sprinkle mixed dried herbs (herbs de Provence)
  13. Prepare Black pepper

I forgot to dot extra butter on top but it still came out crisp with adequately brown. This is a meat and carb heavy dish, so it goes really well with fresh side salads like a Rocket Salad with Balsamic Dressing, or a Garden Salad with French or Italian Dressing. Steps to make Cottage Pie:
  1. Dice the onions and slice the carrots thinly. Fry on a medium heat with a little oil season with mixed dried herbs, salt and pepper.
  2. Thinly slice the celery sticks and add to the frying pan.
  3. Once the onion starts to soften after about 10 minutes add the minced beef. Break it up into smaller chunks with a fork or spatula.
  4. While the beef is browning off peel the spuds and chop them into small chunks. Cover with water and boil on high.
  5. To prepare the liquor put the kettle on to boil. add the vegetable bullion beef stock cube, gravy granules and Worcestershire sauce to a measuring jug.
  6. Pour on boiling water and make up to a pint.
  7. Pour as much of the liquor into the meat as will fit, simmer to reduce… top up as necessary.
  8. Once the potatoes are nice and soft (20-25 mins) drain, add the margarine or butter and mash thoroughly.
  9. Pour the meat and vegetables into an oven proof dish. Cover with mash potatoes using a fork, try to keep it really fluffy and make lots of peeks so the top gets crispy.
  10. Cook in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 Degrees C
  11. Cover with grated cheddar and return to the oven for 10 mins
  12. It’s done… plate up and enjoy.
