In a small skillet, cook the beef, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. In a Dutch oven, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the sloppy joe mix, water, tomato sauce and paste; heat through.

- Maak de gehaktballetjes: meng het gehakt, het paneermeel, de eieren, peper en zout en nootmuskaat. Knead alles door elkaar en rol klein tot medium gehaktballetjes.
- Verhit 2 el olie in een grote koekenpan. Bak de gehaktballetjes goudbruin. Zet ze op zij in een grote ovenschaal.
- Voeg 1 el olie toe in de koekenpan. Fruit op een laag vuur de ui, de wortel en de bleekselderij. Ca. 15 min. Voeg de knoflook toe en bak ca. 2 min verder.
- Voeg de passata, het blik tomaten, de worcestersaus, het paprikapoeder, de ketchup, de azijn, de suiker, 200ml water en zout en peper toe. Breng aan de kook en kook ca. 20 min op laag vuur. Indien de saus niet goed dikt kan je een beetje bloem toevoegen. Verwarm ondertussen de oven voor: 180°C elektrisch, 160°C hetelucht
- Schenk de saus over de gehaktballetjes in de ovenschotel en meng de helft van de peterselie erdoorheen. Snij de mozarella in stukjes en verdeel te over de ovenschotel. Geraspte kaas is optioneel maar lekker! Bak ca. 20 min in de oven tot de balletjes gaar zijn en de mozarella gesmolten is.
- Serveer bestrooid met de overige peterselie. Tip van het origineel boekje: eten met geroosterd brood, augurken en dun gesneden rode ui.
